I've been doing business online profitably now for a very long
time -- since 1993. During this period I've watched literally
thousands of people and companies die. There are lots of reasons
they go down, but something that happened to me just yesterday makes
it clear why so many do.
First, I received a spam marketing solictation, cold and
unsolicited. It was for a network marketing "opportunity." I glanced
at the page and saw a line that made me cringe: "Even though I
haven't been with this opportunity very long and don't know very
much about it, I want you to join me." I then trashed the spam,
wondering that anyone could possibly consider that marketing.
Literally minutes later the author of this sophomoric message
called me. I told her that she needed help with her marketing
message, that she couldn't very well tell her prospects that she
didn't know much about her "opportunity's" products and business and
expect people to treat her seriously. I meant the advice kindly, but
she slammed down the receiver saying I was "rude."
It goes without saying that here is a person who doesn't have a
clue how marketing really works, doesn't understand the Internet and
is not going to make it in her "opportunity." Multiply her by
millions of failed dot.coms and entrepreneurs and you have an idea
why so many people have failed online.
These people -- including the hapless woman who called me
yesterday -- have been egregiously let down by their
"opportunities." These "opportunities", you see, don't have a
winning system in place that anyone, even people without prior
sales, marketing and business experience, can tap into at once. As a
result, they advocate the use of spam email and cold calling,
neither of which works.
To a company, they launch their enterprises (which may actually
have credible products and services) with the maximum amount of hype

Step 2: Confirm your prospect's attendance.
These days people are infuriatingly casual about keeping their
commitments. That's why you've got to confirm everything. Email
your prospects with all call details immediately after speaking
with them. Then about 15 minutes before the call they've committed
to, phone them quickly and remind them that the call starts in 15
minutes and confirm that they will be there and that you will be
calling them immediately afterwards to answer their questions (and
make the sale.)
If the prospect isn't there, email him/her at once with all the
details. Like I said people are infuriatingly casual and
thoughtless about their commitments, so don't be surprised if the
person who sounded enthusiastic at 10 a.m. isn't there at 3 p.m.!
You just need to stay focused and on task, something failures are
incapable of.
Whenever possible you need to be on the daily calls and appear
about 5 minutes early. You'll then see which of your prospects is
on the call. We ask every single one of them to identify
themselves as they come on and announce who they are working with.
This facilitates your work. The more people you get on the call,
the more closes you'll make. We have found that about 1 in 3
